F1 Hybrids Seed Versus Heritage Seed Varieties:
F1 hybrids are commercially produced seeds that have had unwanted characteristics removed from the plants ‘ genetic make-up’. F1 stands for ‘first filial’ , meaning that it is the first generation of plants bred from a particular cross. These plants tend to be uniform in appearance and size , and they have been bred to be high yielding , reliable and disease resistant.

The disadvantage of F1 hybrids is that crops tend to mature all at once , which can be frustrating for small-scale gardeners. Seed from these plants should not be saved and replanted , because the second generation of plants will not come true. New seed must therefore be purchased the following year.
Heritage or heirloom vegetables , on the other hand , are old varieties that have been cultivated for many years. Often cropping over a longer period , they are more likely to grow well without chemical pesticides or fertilizers , but may be more variable in shape and colour. Many people consider that they taste much better than the commercial hybrids. Seed can be saved each year , with the plant retaining the same characteristics. However , unless you don’t mind taking a chance you must take care to isolate wind-and -insect pollinated plants so they don’t interbreed with similar plants.
